The Weaver

Using Insight Artistry, we have embarked on an artistic journey exploring the complex themes, feelings, thoughts, and ideas that make up individuals’ experiences with race.

There are seven characters awash in the current of their lives. Some are being swept along unconsciously, while others are raging in the waters. They all belong to their time and place, their realities and their struggles. They also move into a more ethereal dimension, guiding and supporting each other when they are most in need.

What we did

The Weaver is a sequence of interwoven narratives and recollections personalizing the impacts of the construct of race. Time and space collapse and dance as persons from different eras in the U.S. guide each other toward decolonization of self. By homing in on the interiority of a diverse cast of characters, the de-colonization of self, and the line that connects the past, the present, and a hoped for future, the TÉA Company has created a performance piece designed to draw audiences to engage in thoughtful reflection and discussion about the dynamics of race in the U.S., and the felt impact of this social construct. The Weaver premiered on July 12th in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn. The piece is set in a townhouse engaging audiences in a series of encounters with the characters and with each other.
